Research Interests

My interests have focused in several areas over the years. My thesis and subsequent laboratory research focused on the metabolism and DNA-binding activities of carcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbons in cultured rodent and mammary epithelial cells. More recently, I have focused on educational research assessing techniques for presenting human molecular genetics to all levels of high school students, and strategies for developing effective partnerships between university scientists and K–12 schools. I have taught a variety of courses in genetics, biochemistry, and aquarium science, mainly for graduate students and in-service K-12 teachers. My laboratory is currently focused on the genetics of zebrafish and other tropical aquarium fish. I am particularly interested in the application of recent discoveries about the zebrafish genome to other fish species. In addition, my laboratory is exploring environmental factors that may affect sex ratios in the offspring of certain species of cichlids and killifish.
