This type of intercropping is typical of traditional tropical agriculture.  After the bananas were harvested their old stems were cut down (each stem only bears 1 bunch of bananas).  Cassava cuttings were planted in between the bananas.  The over story of widely spaced palms provides some shade and a third crop.  The cassava harvested before the next crop of bananas.
