The dried coir fibers are carded and loosely spun into cords about the diameter of your finger.  These loose cords can be twisted into a thinner, tougher cord that can be woven into floor mats, which is the product most of this coir is destined to become.   Smaller cords can be twisted together to form heavier ropes.  Examine a natural fiber rope; you will see that it is a composite of smaller cords, themselves twisted fibers, twisted together.
