Paramyxoviruses

4/1/13

-RNA viruses

Helical capsid and envelope

Binding with glycoprotein (HN, H or G)

F protein facilitates fusion of envelope with host cell

Genome-

            RNA associated with 3 proteins

                        NP-nucloprotein-structure-associates with matrix

                        L-large RNA polymerase

P-polymerase phosphoprotein-aids polymerase

Replication-

Transcription to full length genome and mRNA size fragments

            Translation

Matrix protein and glycoproteins go to ER and are expressed on cell surface

            RNA Negative strand synthesis

Rapidly associates with NP, P and L

            Released by budding

Members-

Measles-cause cell fusion and Giant cells

Diagnosed by 3 Cs in early infection Cough, coryza, conjunctivitis

Koplik's spots

Fever is most severe component

May lead to encephalitis or subacute sclerosing panencephalitis

Parainfluenza-

Cold like but causes lower respiratory infections

            Croup

Mumps-

            Parotitis-saliva glands infected

            Viremia-spreads to gonads

RSV-Respiratory syncytial virus
