To find the biggest tree in the world we need only to travel a 100 kilometers (60 miles) east, across the hot central valley to the western flank of the Sierra Nevada Range. The mountains trap moisture of the partly dried coastal air ( with some added by transpiring plants in the central valley) and supply enough moisture for forests to grow. Here we see this coniferous forest on the floor of Yosemite Valley, El Captain in the background. The largest organism on earth grows in this forested area.
