The female cones of Sequoia gigantea are larger than those of its coastal relative (being about the size of a hen's egg), but their morphlogy is very similar. Although the trunks are similar in appearance, the woods have quite different properties. The wood of the slowly growing big tree is very brittle and of little commercial value.
