As we descend the leeward side of the White mountains and cross the state line into Nevada we have passed the fourth mountain barrier since our presentation began. We are now some 200 miles (360 km) from the ocean, and the air mass has thoroughly dried out. We enter a portion of the great basin desert in western Nevada. We see a joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) along with a lone butte and a clear sky.
