Subcanopy, canopy, and emergent rainforest trees are tall and slender.  To support their height many trees grow buttressed bases that flair out like the fins on old rocket ships.  This young tree has smooth, light-colored bark, a feature that might reduce epiphyte loads, and is developing buttresses, via localized cambial activity, that will extend a considerable distance up the trunk.
