OK, maybe a footprint in the mud isn't very exciting, but these belong to a cat. La Selva is home to ocelot, margay, and jaguarundi, all small cats. These are too small for ocelot and the margay is largely arboreal, so these probably belong to jaguaroundi (Felis yagouaroundi), which is more terrestrial and more common. These small dark brown cats are seen usually near dawn or dusk. This one was curious about the activity on the trail at night, but students are too big to be prey, however the large rodents, pacas and agoutis are favorites.
