Some rainforest trees have smooth, thin exfoliating bark.  The smooth surface is harder for epiphytes and lianas to attach to.  By frequently exfoliating patches of thin, papery bark, the tree can shed epiphytes.  Here an aroid is about to lose its grip upon the tree trunk.  Does this work well?  Look how clean the tree trunk is.
