Green tree iquanas are a common and very conspicuous organism at La Selva.  This male measures 2.5-3 m long and is shown displaying his dewlap upon his territorial perch.  Females tend to be smaller and more yellow-brown in color.   Sometimes a couple of dozen large iquanas can be observed perched on the upper tree limbs of trees from the vantage point of the suspension bridge.  These large lizards are probably most herbivorous.  A study of their growth demonstrated that a acre of rainforest could produce more edible iquana flesh than beef produced by the same area of pasture, which destroys the rainforest.  Maybe you prefer beef, but you've never tried iquana.
