Here a sloth uses the railing of the suspension bridge to cross the river. This is Hoffman's Two-toed sloth, a species not commonly seen by Costa Rican visitors, but common enough at La Selva. Note the two prominent claws visible over the railing. This picture was donated by a colleague. Occasionally you will spot a sloth moving along a branch up in the canopy, but most commonly you see only a clump of fur in the crotch of a branch. Our class has seen mothers with their baby sloths, a couple of fortunate sightings. To find one, examine the upper branches of Cecropia trees, a favorite food, carefully.
