Thus from this fallen trunk, surrounded by ferns, new trees may grow. In a century or so we might see in the place of this trunk a row of young redwood trees. The coastal redwood is today a very controversial tree. Its wood is easily worked, very durable, and used for many purposes. The trees grow quickly and can be managed by modern forestry methods. Yet the largest trees grow much ore slowly, and from the point of view of a forester it is best to cut the large trees down and let faster growing young ones replace them. However, the large groves of mature trees are very beautiful, and visiting the big tree groves has been a powerful experience for many visitors. Today we have a system of preserves among the productive ( and largely cut) forested land: A compromise between both points of view.
