Among the many remarkable plants that grow in association with the coastal redwoods is this tan oak, Lithocarpus densiflora. It grows in the dense shade beneath the redwoods. It really is not a true oak (its leaves are like a beech) but it is the only North American representative of a closely related genus most abundant in the mountains of tropicla Asia.
