Before leaving the coast we shouldn't miss another plant that grows in a few acid bogs of the coastal southern Oregon. This is the famous insect-catching cobra lily, Darlingtonia californica. Insects fly into the opening of the modified leaf seen here, are trapped inside, and digested by juices at the bottom of the cavity. This the plant obtains a source of nitrogen in conditions where this nutrient is difficult for a plant to obtain.
