The coast is backed by low mountains which tend to catch the moisture released by the damp prevailing winds blowing from the Pacific ocean. Here we see coastal forest above the outlet of Damnation Creek, Del Norte Coast in northern California. The low tree shapes near the beach are responses to the strong winds and the damage of salt spray.
