After descending eastward to the floor of the Owens Valley, we next ascend the slopes of the White Mountains, heading towards the Nevada Frontier. At the middle elevations of these mountains, up to about 2500m, we see the pinyon -juniper woodlands so characteristic of much of the arid uplands of southwestern United States. In the distance, across the floor of the Owens Valley, we see the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada Range, and the Palisade Glaciers.
