On the upper slopes of the White Mountains are found forests of the bristlecone pine, the oldest organism on earth. Although this tree does grow in other locations in the southwest, always on isolated and high mountains, it is the White Mountains where the forests attain their greatest grandeur. Here we see the bristlecone pine forest in the Schulman Memorial Grove. It was in this forest, presently set aside as a preserve in Inyo National Forest, that the Arizona botanist discovered the age of these ancient trees.
